The Youngstown Free Library and Friends of the Youngstown Library mutually invite eligible students to apply for the Ruby Carey Memorial Scholarship, with April 24 as the submission deadline. This scholarship award of $1,500, funded by both organizations, will be presented to the successful candidate upon entering college or university to assist in the purchase of textbooks and required materials in pursuit of higher education.
Eligibility requirements include being a Youngstown or Town of Porter resident planning to attend an accredited college, community college, university or vocational school within 12 months. The student must also possess a current library card in good standing from any library in the NIOGA system, and a photocopy of the library card must be submitted with the completed application. Additional requirements are delineated on the formal applications, which are available at the Lewiston-Porter Senior High School guidance office, at the Youngstown Free Library, or on the Youngstown Free Library website.
The Ruby Carey Memorial Scholarship is designed to honor a deserving graduate who demonstrated some the attributes exhibited by Carey, who helped organize the Youngstown Free Library in 1949 and became a highly valued member of the staff.
