Minority leader

Fourth District Niagara County Legislator Jeffrey Elder, the body’s minority leader, released the following statement on Thursday: “It is my honor to stand with Niagara Falls Council members and call for all flavored tobacco products, including menthols, to be taken off the shelves in Niagara Falls. These products are extremely addictive and use predatory marketing tactics to target the youth in our community.

“The older generation knows all too well about the harmful effects of smoking. We cannot allow tobacco companies to trap our younger generation by selling fun flavors. Menthol and other flavored tobacco products cause addiction to worsen, as they provide a more attractive option for people to use.

“Dr. Rolanda Ward from the Niagara Coalition for Health Equity stated, ‘About 17% of our high school students still smoke cigarettes and e-tobacco products.’

“This number is unacceptable and, by taking these products off the shelves, we will be decreasing how readily available they are to our youth.

“The people of Niagara Falls have suffered from many different health inequities compared to those living in surrounding communities. Now is the time to act and protect the next generation from harmful effects of tobacco. Please join me in calling for all flavored tobacco products, including menthols, to be taken off the shelves in our city.”
