Volunteers provide one-on-one literacy tutoring & mentorship for young students in Buffalo, Niagara Falls city schools

Read to Succeed press release

Read to Succeed is hosting four information sessions for prospective volunteers to serve as tutor/mentors in its high-impact tutoring program known as Experience Corps, in Buffalo and Niagara Falls city schools.

Experience Corps Buffalo, a partnership between Read to Succeed and the National AARP Foundation, recruits, trains and supports mature older adult volunteers to provide one-on-one literacy tutoring for children who are not reading at grade-level in first, second and third grade. Currently, Read to Succeed is supporting 137 older adult tutor/mentors working with 400 young struggling readers across 13 elementary schools.

The information sessions will be offered on the following dates:

1 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, at the Frank E. Merriweather Jr. Library, 1324 Jefferson Ave., Buffalo

1 p.m. Wednesday, May 13, at the Frank E. Merriweather Jr. Library, 1324 Jefferson Ave., Buffalo

10 a.m. Thursday, May 14, at the Roswell Park Community Outreach and Engagement Center, 907 Michigan Ave., Buffalo

1 p.m. Tuesday, May 19, at the Earl W. Brydges Main Library, 1317 Portage Road, Niagara Falls

Experience Corps volunteer tutor/mentors meet individually with a student two-three times per week for 30 minutes per session. Sessions are very structured and focus on building fluency, vocabulary and comprehension skills through repeated reading practice and models of fluent reading. Experience Corps volunteer tutor/mentors receive significant training and on-site support from a Read to Succeed literacy coach.

If you have a few hours a week to spare; become part of the solution today by volunteering as a Read to Succeed Experience Corps tutor mentor!

Prospective volunteers can fill out a volunteer interest form and sign up for an information session at: https://www.readtosucceedbuffalo.org/volunteer-interest-form.

More about Read to Succeed: Read to Succeed Inc. (RTS) began in 2007 in response to the staggering literacy deficits among the citizens of Buffalo. Today, RTS sharpens its focus where it can have the most impact – increasing early childhood literacy and third grade reading scores by preparing children for kindergarten and the early grades through improved exposure to developmentally appropriate, literacy-rich environments wherever they are, including child care, Head Start, public school, or home with a parent or caregiver. The nonprofit organization works to develop models for improving literacy that create systemic change in how the Buffalo community prepares children for success in school and supports them once they enter public school.
