Water Street in the Village of Lewiston was packed with people Friday, as the Lewiston Smelt Festival officially kicked off the summer season.
A smelt is a small, silver-colored fish that, once breaded and cooked, sort of resembles a cross between a shrimp and a French fry – here, they’re called “fries with eyes.”
Visitors enjoyed deep-fried smelt boats compliments of DiMino's Lewiston Tops and The Griffon Brewery & Gastropub – which hosted the event; listened to music performed on the patio by Seventh Sign; and tried their hand at a 50/50 split draw benefitting the Niagara River Anglers Association.
New this year, Smelt Fest super fans purchased swag including a drink koozie and T-shirt.
The River Region’s first seasonal festival is organized by the Upward Niagara Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by Tony's Seafood of Warren, Rhode Island; Mount St. Mary's Hospital; and the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission.
