Niagara Gospel Mission Press Release

In response to the recent government shutdown and resulting suspension of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits, Niagara Gospel Mission has announced an expansion of its meal services to ensure no one in the Niagara Falls community goes hungry.

Traditionally, the shelter’s lunch program has served only residents, while dinner services have always been open to the broader community. Beginning Nov. 3, Niagara Gospel Mission will open its lunch program to all community members, offering nutritious, hot meals each day, alongside its existing community dinner program at 5 p.m.

“We know the shutdown and SNAP benefit interruptions are creating real hardship for families, seniors and individuals across Niagara Falls,” said John Cooper Jr., Niagara Gospel Mission executive director. “We want our neighbors to know they are not alone – our doors are open, and everyone is welcome at our table.”

The shelter’s expanded services will operate from 1317 Portage Road, Niagara Falls, with lunch served at noon, and dinner at 5 p.m. No identification or proof of residence is required to receive a meal.

Community members who wish to support this effort can do so through donations of nonperishable food items, financial contributions, or by volunteering their time. Information on how to help can be found at www.niagaragospelmission.org or by calling 716-205-8805, Ext. 105.

“This is what community is about: Standing together when times are tough,” Cooper said. “We’re grateful for the continued support that makes it possible for us to meet these increased needs.”

Niagara Gospel Mission plans to provide service during the week of Nov. 3-8. It will reevaluate after a one-week assessment.

Located at 1317 Portage Road, Niagara Gospel Mission is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit providing services to the homeless and poor. Visit niagaragospelmission.org to learn more about current services – and plans to develop services for homeless women.
