Buffalo Bills cornerback Christian Benford served at Community Missions of Niagara Frontier’s Thanksgiving luncheon on Nov. 22.

When he walked into the Buffalo Avenue agency, Benford greeted staff and fans in the lobby. Vice President of Public Relations & Development Christian Hoffman spoke to Benford about attendees receiving “Blessing Bags,” which consisted of hats, gloves, hand warmers, handwritten seasonal notes, snacks and lip balm. These bags were put together by M&T Bank, which is a community partner with Community Missions.

After speaking with Hoffman, Benford and a group went downstairs where the luncheon was held. Benford was quick to step behind the counter and place himself where volunteers needed help. He served turkey to attendees, asking people if they would like anything else – even offering fist bumps over the counter. Attendees had smiles plastered on their faces, and excitement filled the space as new arrivals were served buffet-style.

Benford took time for the press once there was a lull in the food line.

“I’m a man of God; I’m here to do the Lord’s work – every step, every thought, every action, is for me to walk in my faith – walk in Christ,” he said. “Stuff like this I have the biggest passion for. Football is just a platform for me to go spread his (God’s) word.”

After speaking with the media, Benford immediately returned behind the counter and resumed serving the attendees.

Community Missions reached out to Benford with prior knowledge of his community service, and of Benford’s 47 Hearts Foundation. The nonprofit hosts a Thanksgiving luncheon every year.

Hoffman was aware of the publicity in the City of Buffalo regarding community service, and said he hoped that, through Benford assisting and serving at the luncheon, more attention would be afforded to the Niagara Falls area.

"For Christian Benford and his 47 Hearts Foundation to sponsor our Thanksgiving lunch was wonderful,” Hoffman said. “It helps shine a light on the fact that food insecurity is a considerable issue here in Niagara Falls and Niagara County. He was eager to get behind our serving line and give out turkey. We really appreciate his presence, his support, his interest in our programs, and his love of everyone we serve."

Season of giving

Hoffman also noted Community Missions' annual “Holiday Help” program is underway, and is looking for sponsors who would like to make the holidays a bit brighter for their neighbors. More than 200 families have requested assistance this holiday season.

“We screen all families, take a wish list for each child, and are now looking for families, businesses, church groups, or anyone that would be interested in shopping for these families,” he said. “Sponsors can request a certain size of family, or if there are any special requests, and we will do our best to find the perfect match.

“Anyone interested in sponsoring a family can sign up at https://bit.ly/cmiholidaysponsor. Please email the program at santa@communitymissions.org with any questions.

Thank you so much for considering helping a local family this holiday season!”
