High winds, blowing snow, hazardous travel conditions; residents advised to avoid travel

Submitted by the Press Secretary

Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz has issued a travel advisory for Erie County beginning at 11 a.m. today, Monday Dec. 29. High winds and blowing snow are expected to create near-whiteout conditions across the area as a multiday lake-effect winter storm system crosses Western New York. Residents are advised to avoid travel if possible. If travel is unavoidable, be sure your vehicle is prepared for winter driving and has a winter survival kit inside.

Additionally, All Erie County offices will be closing at 11:30 a.m. due to an incoming winter storm that is expected to make travel hazardous throughout the region. High winds and blowing snow are forecast today and are expected to continue for the near future.

Poloncarz authorized the early dismissal to give nonessential employees as much time as possible to arrive home safely before the worst of the anticipated weather hits. Essential employees are expected to remain at work as scheduled unless excused by their department head. Employees approved to work from home are required to work remotely.
