Submitted by the Niagara County District Attorney’s Office
Niagara County District Attorney Brian D. Seaman announced Richard J. Fox entered a guilty plea in County Court today to the crime of murder in the second degree. Fox admitted he killed 32-year-old Crystal Curthoys, formerly of Lockport, in January 2023, in Niagara Falls.
Curthoys’ remains were found by Niagara Falls police in a house formerly occupied by Fox. It is believed that Curthoys was also living at that address for a time before her murder.
Seaman said, “Although this defendant is already serving a life sentence, it was important to us to hold him accountable for this murder. Crystal was not just a number to be added to this defendant’s tally sheet. She was a person with a family and a life. What she would have made of the life before her will now never be known. We hope that holding this defendant accountable for her killing brings some small amount of consolation to Crystal’s family.”
Fox faces as much as 25 years to life when he returns to court to be sentenced by County Court Judge John Ottaviano. That sentence can be added to the time he is already serving.
The case was investigated by the Niagara Falls Police Department and prosecuted by First Assistant District Attorney Doreen Hoffmann and Executive Assistant District Attorney Maria Stoelting.
