Join Chelsea Moore and Eddie Knibloe from the Buffalo Maritime Center at the Niagara History Center at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 15, as they revisit the historic bicentennial voyage of the Erie Canal Boat Seneca Chief in 2025. The voyage of the replica canal boat began in Buffalo last June and continued to New York City, commemorating the Erie Canal bicentennial.
Stops at the various communities along the canal, including Lockport, featured welcome ceremonies, a symbolic “Gathering of the Waters,” hands-on programming, an immersive onboard exhibit highlighting not only the canal’s history and impact but also the traditional boatbuilding skills and craftsmanship that brought the Erie Canal Boat to life.
As the Erie Canal Boat Seneca Chief traveled to each port along the canal, white pine trees were planted as a symbolic tribute to the Haudenosaunee and a commitment to a sustainable future. The stop in Lockport included fireworks, and the educational programming from that trip helped to shape the vision for this year's “Back to Buffalo Tour.”
Moore and Knibloe will share the plans for this upcoming voyage back west, as well as the student and community programming that will accompany the Erie Canal Boat Seneca Chief at each stop. The program is at the Niagara History Center’s main campus, at 215 Niagara St., Lockport. Refreshments will be served.
