Tops supports 30th annual National Prescription Drug Take Back Day

Saturday, April 25, marks the 30th annual National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, an initiative led by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. In support of this important event, Tops Friendly Markets is reminding the community that all 54 Tops pharmacy locations serve as approved drop-off sites for unused or expired prescription medications.

Each Tops pharmacy features clearly marked disposal bins, providing customers with a simple, safe and convenient way to properly discard medications they no longer need.

“Tops is proud to support the 30th annual National Prescription Drug Take Back Day and continue our commitment to the health and safety of the communities we serve,” said Matthew Hamed, director of pharmacy for Northeast Shared Services, a subsidiary of Northeast Grocery Inc., which oversees Tops Friendly Markets. “As we reach this milestone year, we’re reminded how important it is to provide safe, accessible options for medication disposal – not just on Take Back Day, but every day. Proper disposal helps prevent misuse and protects our environment.”

During the most recent Take Back Day in October 2025, hundreds of thousands of pounds of prescription medications were collected nationwide. Since the program began in 2010, more than 19 million pounds of medication have been safely removed from homes and properly disposed of.
