On Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 22-23, "1776", a musical production about the creating of the Declaration of Independence and the official birth of the U.S., will be presented by the Porter Players (in association with Youngstown Presbyterian Church), on the outdoor stage of the historic Post Theatre at Fort Niagara State Park (6 Porter Ave., Youngstown). There will be two performances on Saturday, at 2 and 5:30 p.m., and a 2 p.m. matinee Sunday. There is no admission fee, but donations are gratefully accepted. Patrons are asked to bring their own outdoor chairs.
This is a "semi-staged" production, a kind of hybrid between a concert version and a fully staged production. This show premiered on Broadway in 1969, came out on film in 1972, and has enjoyed many productions nationwide since then. It is one of many productions throughout the country taking place this year in honor of this country's 250th anniversary.
The Porter Players is a recently formed community theater group that includes familiar faces from Youngstown, Ransomville, and from throughout Niagara and Erie counties. The production is stage-directed by Paige Hardison, with musical direction by Claudia Andres and choreography by Rebekah Glunt. There will also be a live pit orchestra.
This production is part of a summer concert series taking place at the Post Theatre outdoor stage, the proceeds for which go into funding the ongoing restoration of the historic theater.
