A young doe was hit and killed in Youngstown earlier this summer, which created a catalyst for resident Susan Bray to gather together almost 20 signatures to stop speeding in the village once and for all. She presented her petition at the Village Board’s regular business meeting in July. She then followed up last Thursday at the August meeting.

While the board and Mayor Mike DeDario cannot make alterations to the roads targeted for lower speeds – namely Lockport Road, Church Street and Main Street – some hope was given by Police Chief Shawn Bosi. He said that, while there had been difficulties in the past due to equipment shortages, heavy radar would be deployed on those roads.

“We did have a lot of equipment issues this year,” he explained. “It’s been difficult. … We’re going to fully address the problem.”

The Village Board voted to allow the sale of two of the three vehicles used by police in Youngstown to buy a new vehicle. They also approved 12 firearms in the police’s possession being sold and three new firearms bought from those sales.

There are three members serving in the Village of Youngstown Police Department.

DeDario announced Trustee Rick Stortecky’s resignation.

Stortecky recently ran for mayor, but was defeated by DeDario. He formerly served as deputy mayor.

After the meeting, DeDario said he intends to appoint a replacement to fill the now-vacant board seat.
