The Niagara County Historical Society will host a “Cemetery Tales” tour at Glenwood Cemetery in Lockport on Sunday, Aug. 4. The public is invited to join the tour and meet some of the more famous people who are buried there.

Guests will encounter artist Raphael Beck, who designed Lockport’s famous mural of the opening of the Erie Canal (now to be seen in the Erie Canal Discovery Center and Lockport High School) and the logo for the 1901 Pan American Exposition in Buffalo.

William R. Kenan, an inventor, industrialist, and animal husbandry expert, will tell about his life and times; while Burt Van Horn, U.S. representative from New York during the Civil War and a staunch supporter of Abraham Lincoln, will discuss the turbulent politics of the era.

Isabella Sutherland, one of the most interesting of the Seven Sutherland Sisters (known for their floor-length hair and multimillion-dollar 19th century hair care products mail-order business), will relate the family’s compelling rags-to-riches-to-rags story.

The tour will begin at 1 p.m. and will be finished by 3 p.m. or earlier. Guests are advised to bring water, wear comfortable walking shoes, and bring portable chairs if they need to sit.

The donation will be $10 per person. Tour participants can park at the Glenwood Cemetery Mausoleum or off the road in the cemetery if needed.
