Last year’s Bills third round draft pick, defensive tackle Dewayne Carter, presented an inspirational talk to the students about facing challenges in life.
Four students from Cardinal O’Hara High School were among the participants. Akyra Starks, received special recognition and a special gift as a senior, having received a full Oishei scholarship for four years.
Other O’Hara students who were honored are sophomore Kaaher Rafeek, junior Giavonna Adinolfi and freshman Julian Cooper.
Each of the students received a four-year scholarship from the Oishei Foundation when they enrolled at Cardinal O’Hara and are honored at the end of each school year.
The Oishei Scholarship provides full, four years of tuition assistance to Western New York’s private high schools and is specifically designed for students of color with a financial need. An additional goal of the scholarship is to increase the community outreach and diversity of these private high schools.
