Erie County District Attorney Michael J. Keane announced a jury found Kindu Z. Jeancy, 24, of Democratic Republic of the Congo, guilty of one count of sexual abuse in the first degree (class “D” felony) and one count of unlawful imprisonment in the second degree (class “A” misdemeanor). Jurors rendered their decision Monday afternoon after approximately 90 minutes of deliberation following a 3½-day trial, convicting the defendant of all counts in the indictment.
On Friday, Aug. 11, 2023, at approximately 4 p.m., the defendant subjected the victim to sexual contact by forcible compulsion. The defendant, an asylum seeker, pushed the victim onto a couch, held her arms down and forced himself on top of the victim. He then prevented her from leaving the room. The crime occurred inside of a hotel room on the 600 block of Dingens Street in the Town of Cheektowaga. The defendant was residing in the hotel at the time of the crime.
Jeancy faces a maximum of seven years in prison when he is sentenced before State Supreme Court Justice M. William Boller. He remains held without bail. A temporary order of protection issued on behalf of the victim remains in effect.
Keane commends Lt. Justin Haag and Det. Jeffrey Fial of the Cheektowaga Police Department for their work in this investigation, as well as victim/witness services bureau advocate Clarissa Acosta.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Rachel M. Vicario of the special victims/domestic violence bureau, and Assistant District Attorney Jamie E. Englerth of the justice courts bureau.
