Press Release

The Niagara History Center will once again commemorate Veterans Day with a program for children ages 7 to 11, exploring the “History of Secret Military Communications.” Participants will learn how the U.S. military secretly communicated during wartime from the American Revolution up through the 20th century conflicts.

Activities will include trying your hand at Morse code and making a simple telegraph, using a cypher wheel to decode a secret message, building a small radio from a kit, learning about the role of homing pigeons during wartime, and how the Navaho code talkers helped the U.S. and their Allies win World War II. There will be other hands-on crafts and games related to the topic as well.

The program will take place at the Niagara History Center, 215 Niagara St., Lockport, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11. The charge is $15 per child and includes all materials and a snack at noontime. Preregistration is required and can be made by calling 716-434-7433 or emailing info@niagarahistory.org. More information is available on the History Center’s website at niagarahistory.org.
