NativityMiguel Middle School of Buffalo announced the unveiling of a vibrant new mural created by current students, alumni, and acclaimed local muralist Tyshaun D. Tyson, owner of Left-Handed Bandit Artistic Services LLC. The artwork commemorates the school’s 20-year legacy and celebrates its recent relocation to a newly renovated campus at 128 Wilson St., Buffalo.

The mural is the result of a six-week creative process during which NativityMiguel students worked closely with Tyson, a well-known Western New York visual artist with a decade of experience designing large- and small-scale public works. Commissioned in the summer of 2025, Tyson led students through multiple workshops exploring mural artistry, public art, symbolism and storytelling, ultimately transforming a once-blank wall into a vibrant expression of community identity, culture and hope.

Students intentionally incorporated a rich collection of themes and imagery that reflect who they are, what they care about, and what NativityMiguel stands for. These elements include:

√ Basketball and football, honoring athletics and recreation

√ The continent of Africa, representing cultural pride and student heritage

√ Kindness and being yourself, celebrating individuality and authenticity

√ Family, community and belonging

√ Children playing, representing the daily joy, laughter and community spirit at NMMS

√ Black and equal rights symbolism, highlighting justice and equity

√ School supplies and academic symbols, connecting creativity to learning

√ The Earth, underscoring global awareness

√ A sunset and bold, beautiful colors representing hope, transition and growth

√ Clouds and stars, symbolizing dreaming big, thinking freely, and reaching for the stars

√ A cross, representing the central role of faith in the school community

Throughout the project, students learned how art influences space, communicates values, and brings people together. They practiced collaboration, delegation, patience, and creative problem-solving skills that reflect the school’s mission and resonate far beyond the completed wall. The process also emphasized responsibility and dedication, with students attending sessions outside school hours and fully committing to their shared vision.

“This mural is more than artwork – it’s a living reflection of our students’ voices, strengths and dreams,” said Christopher Pitek, head of school. “It captures the spirit of NativityMiguel: community, resilience, faith, and the belief that our young people can shape the world around them.”

The completed mural stands as a testament to imagination, teamwork, and the transformative power of student leadership.

As NativityMiguel looks forward to its next 20 years, the artwork will continue to inspire current and future students who walk through the halls of 128 Wilson St.
