Niagara County District Attorney Brian D. Seaman announced Chanel N. Groom, age 38, entered a guilty plea in County Court this morning to the crime of manslaughter in the first degree. Groom admitted to killing 36-year-old Timothy Day of Buffalo on June 1, 2024, inside her home in Niagara Falls. Day died as the result of a single stab wound to the chest.

Groom faces up to 18 years in prison when she returns for sentencing before Niagara County Judge Caroline Wojtaszek on March 25.

Seaman said, “This domestic incident was quickly escalated by the defendant to extreme violence. There was no reason for Mr. Day to lose his life that night.”

The case was investigated by the Niagara Falls Police Department and prosecuted by District Attorney Brian Seaman and First Assistant District Attorney Doreen Hoffmann.
