Sheriff Michael J. Filicetti announced law enforcement agencies throughout Niagara County will participate in a coordinated statewide initiative aimed at raising awareness of the dangers of impaired driving and enhancing roadway safety during St. Patrick’s Day celebrations.
As part of a combined effort to deter impaired driving, prevent injuries, and save lives, law enforcement officers across New York will increase patrols and enforcement during the STOP-DWI St. Patrick’s Day high-visibility engagement campaign. The initiative will take place Thursday, March 12, through Wednesday, March 18.
During this period, the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office, along with local law enforcement agencies countywide, will be out in force to reduce impaired driving and related crashes, injuries and fatalities.
The STOP-DWI St. Patrick’s Day high-visibility engagement campaign is one of several statewide enforcement initiatives supported by STOP-DWI New York and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee. Similar high-visibility campaigns are conducted throughout the year during high-risk periods, including Super Bowl weekend, Halloween, Thanksgiving, the holiday season, Memorial Day weekend, Independence Day weekend and Labor Day weekend.
STOP-DWI enforcement efforts across New York have contributed to significant reductions in alcohol- and drug-related traffic fatalities; however, impaired driving continues to claim too many lives. Highly visible and well-publicized enforcement initiatives such as this campaign are designed to further deter impaired driving and enhance public safety on New York’s roadways.
