Supporting mental health for perinatal patients and youth
Submitted by the Niagara County Department of Health
The Niagara County Healthy Moms/Healthy Babies Coalition invites allied health professionals to a special training event, “Using Project TEACH to Help Those Who Help,” from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday, May 27, at the Orleans Niagara BOCES Technology and Conference Center, 4124 Saunders Settlement Road, Sanborn.
This professional development opportunity, made available through partnership with the Niagara County Department of Mental Health & Substance Abuse Services and the Community Network of Care (CNOC) for Children & Families in Niagara County, introduces participants to Project TEACH (Training and Education for the Advancement of Children’s Health), New York state’s psychiatry access program for pediatric and perinatal mental health.
“By bringing Project TEACH to Niagara County, we are empowering our local providers with direct access to specialized psychiatric expertise,” said Myrla Gibbons Doxey, deputy director mental health and substance abuse and chair of CNOC. “This collaboration provides the opportunity for our workforce to not only be prepared to identify mental health challenges early, but to also be equipped with a robust network of support to improve outcomes for our youngest residents and their families.”
“Project TEACH provides critical support to those on the front lines caring for families across New York state,” said Janice Jenosheck, co-chairperson of the Niagara County Healthy Moms/Healthy Babies Coalition. “We are excited to bring this training to our community. By increasing our understanding of mental health issues, we can better support families and children right here in Niagara County and strengthen the skills of our local providers.”
The training will cover:
•An overview of Project TEACH and the services available for perinatal patients.
•Recognition and treatment of depression, anxiety and psychosis in perinatal patients.
•Recognition and treatment of ADHD, autism spectrum disorders, and aggression in children and adolescents.
Presentations will include time for questions and discussion, fostering an interactive learning environment. The session is designed for allied health professionals, including those in pediatric, maternal health, and related fields.
