Poetry slam at Prophet Isaiah House in Niagara Falls

The Prophet Isaiah Robertson’s Second Coming House welcomes the InnerCity Minds Poetry Slam to its artistic campus for the organization's monthly spoken word event from 6-8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8. The program is invites poets, performers, neighbors and supporters of the arts to experience an evening of creativity, storytelling and community.

The InnerCity Minds Poetry Slam series was created to provide an open and welcoming space where spoken word artists of every experience level can express themselves without judgment. Since its inception, the organization has grown into a vibrant creative community, hosting poetry slams on the second Saturday of every month, typically at the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center.

Jasiah Jackson-Hackett, storytelling coordinator at the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center, also serves as a member of the Prophet Isaiah House team, and led the effort to bring the monthly series to the Prophet Isaiah House venue.

"This event is about creating a space where everyone feels welcome to share their voice," Jackson-Hackett said. "Whether you're stepping up to the microphone for the first time or you've been performing for years, InnerCity Minds is a place where your story matters."

Adding to the evening's atmosphere, the August Poetry Slam will feature live musical accompaniment, with a band providing an improvised backdrop as spoken word artists perform their original work. The collaboration is intended to create a unique experience that blends poetry and live music. The event is free and open to the public.

Prophet Isaiah House is located at 1308 Ontario Ave., Niagara Falls. It is the internationally recognized artist-built environment created by artist, carpenter, and self-proclaimed prophet Isaiah Robertson, who transformed his Niagara Falls home into an intricate work of art. Today, the Niagara Falls National Heritage Area is preserving the site, serving as the long-term steward, and developing it as a multiuse community and artist space. Hosting the InnerCity Minds Poetry Slam reflects that vision by bringing artists and the community together through spoken word and creative expression.
