Statement on incident in Niagara Gorge

The New York State Park Police have released the following details regarding an event that occurred on April 2 in Niagara Falls:

At 6:25 p.m., New York State Park Police responded to the exterior of the Aquarium of Niagara for a medical call. Upon arrival, officers found 42-year-old Mark Heugan of Niagara Falls. He was suffering from injuries consistent with an accident and, upon investigation, it was determined that Heugan had driven a 2008 Toyota Tundra through a fence and into the Niagara Gorge in the area of Depot Avenue near the Whirlpool Bridge.

Heugan was able to exit the vehicle and walk out of the Gorge, where he received medical treatment. Officers searched the area of the vehicle and determined there were no other victims.

Heugan was transported to ECMC by AMR ambulance for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The incident remains under investigation by the New York State Park Police with the assistance of The New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Niagara County District Attorney’s Office. New York State Parks is investigating means to remove the car from the Gorge.
