June is Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month, and two hospitals in Niagara County are partnering with the Western New York Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association to help raise awareness and encourage people to take charge of their brain health.
On Tuesday, June 3, Lockport Memorial Hospital will “GO PURPLE” – staff will be encouraged to wear purple, the official color of the Alzheimer’s movement, and WNY Chapter staff will be on hand from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to provide education on brain health and connect caregivers and people living with dementia to critical support services.
On Wednesday, June 4, Mount St. Mary's Hospital will also “GO PURPLE” with staff wearing purple, and WNY Chapter staff in the lobby from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to share information and resources.
Staff from the WNY Chapter will have handouts for visitors with care and support resources, as well as information on healthy habits for one’s brain and body. Staff and visitors will also have the opportunity to sign up for the Niagara County Walk to End Alzheimer's taking place Oct. 18.
More than 7 million people age 65 and older in the U.S. are living with Alzheimer’s dementia, including 426,500 in New York state. The lifetime risk for the disease at age 45 is one in five for women and one in 10 for men.
Although the greatest known risk factor for Alzheimer’s is advancing age, there are a number of other factors – including physical activity, not smoking, education, challenging your mind, managing blood pressure and diet – that can be modified to reduce a person’s risk.
