Press Release
This Saturday, June 14, Old Falls Street will be the site of “Veterans Get Outside Day,” which features family fun, music and vendors, as well as information for veterans. This is the third year for the event that connects veterans with resources and encourages outdoor activities to improve mental health.
This event is free, and you don’t have to be a service member or a veteran to attend.
“Veterans Get Outside Day” will feature activities for the whole family, including a fun run/walk, entertainment and activities on Old Falls Street, with a vendor fair. Representatives from the New York and U.S. departments of veterans services, community outdoor recreation and veterans organizations will participate.
“Niagara Falls is one of the premier outdoor locations in the United States, and I can think of no finer place to encourage veterans to come out and enjoy nature,” said John Wells, chairman of Military Veterans Advocacy. “People who spend time outdoors have a better outlook on life, and the sheer beauty and power of the falls is inspiring.”
Some of the special activities planned include:
•Billy Bob Duo/Buffalo Blues for Vets: Live music from the 1960s and 1970s from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
•Niagara Falls State Park interpretive walks: Take a one-hour guided walk in Niagara Falls State Park to explore the local natural and cultural history in and around the park. Walks leave from the state park booth at corner of Old Falls Street and Rainbow Boulevard at 11:45 a.m. and 3 p.m. An additional walk may be added at 1:30 p.m.. based on demand.
•Cave of the Winds: Free admission and parking at Niagara Falls State Park for New York Lifetime Liberty Pass holders (veterans, Gold Star parents, spouses or children), and New York Veterans with proof of residency and veteran status. Free admission for the first 100 non-veteran spouses, children or veterans from outside of New York with a sticker from the event.
•Niagara Falls Scenic Trolley: Free all-day hop-on/hop-off passes for the first 150 guests on the Niagara Falls Scenic Trolley with a Military Veterans Advocacy sticker from the event.
•Niagara Falls Aerospace Museum: Free admission for a docent-led guided tour of the Niagara Falls Aerospace Museum with a Military Veterans Advocacy sticker from the event.
•Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center: Free admission for a docent-led guided tour of the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center with a Military Veterans Advocacy sticker from the event. The center is accessible by the Discover Niagara Shuttle.
•Old Fort Niagara: Veterans with a Military Veterans Advocacy sticker from the event, and proof of veteran status, can get free admission June 14 or 15 (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.). Experience history where it happened. Event attendees can get the free Discover Niagara Shuttle at the corner of Old Falls and First streets for transportation to and from Fort Niagara.
•Vendors: Visit local and regional vendors featuring jewelry, pottery and glassware and other items.
“Veterans Get Outside Day” is an initiative sponsored by Military Veterans Advocacy to address the veteran suicide rate. It is no secret that suicide claims far too many people. Military veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injury are at an even greater risk of depression, unclear thinking, and suicide.
A different location is selected each year for the signature event.
