Niagara Gospel Mission 'Feed The Falls' provided food, fun, free clothing to hundreds

On Saturday, around 500 men, women and children participated in a free cookout and clothing giveaway hosted by Niagara Gospel Mission, at 1317 Portage Road, Niagara Falls.

“The Niagara Falls Community is rich with kindness and generosity, and we saw that at our Summer Feed the Falls event today,” said John Cooper Jr., executive director.

He explained, “Our Thanksgiving and Christmas ‘Feed the Falls’ events have reached around 3,000 homeless and impoverished individuals of every age each year. We wanted to connect with these vulnerable populations more often to offer Christian support, tell them about our programs, and encourage them with compassion and practical assistance.”

Mission volunteers grilled hundreds of hot dogs, passed out chips and cold drinks, and distributed piles of donated clothing items during the event.

“We wanted to provide a fun, safe and generous environment for people in downtown Niagara Falls who needed to understand their community really cares about them,” Cooper said. “One person told us, ‘I was on my last pair of shoes, I am so thankful I found just what I needed in the right size.’ That was a blessing to hear.”

Cooper said it was a joy to watch as volunteers from the agency’s RECON recovery program partnered with community volunteers to make the summer “Feed the Falls” a success. In total, NGM handed out over 200 bags of free clothing.

“Our RECON community and our very faithful volunteers made this an unforgettable and successful time of giving and gratitude,” Cooper said. “We are so thankful for those who donated food, drinks, clothing and their prayers and volunteer energy to make this a great event!”

Niagara Gospel Mission will begin preparing for its Thanksgiving and Christmas “Feed the Falls” event in September.
