Press Release
It’s the 200th anniversary of the opening of the Erie Canal and what better way to celebrate than a free family day at the Niagara History Center!
One is schedule for Saturday, Aug. 16, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 215 Niagara St., Lockport.
Upon arrival, each child will receive their “Packet Boat Bill of Lading,” which they fill in with stamps earned by visiting various locations throughout the museum and grounds, learning about an aspect of the Erie Canal, doing a brief hands-on activity and receiving a small token.
Stops along the “canal” include a general store, an inn, blacksmith and cooper shops, apple farmer, surveyor’s office and even a library. Other activities include making a paper toy, playing “Pin the Tail on Sal,” and finding where Sal the mule is hiding on the museum grounds (she has tried, and doesn’t want to pull that boat).
This is a free event, but preregistration is required. Visit niagarahistory.org, go to “Explore,” then “events,” and “Erie Canal Family Fun Day,” and “Get Tickets.” For questions or more information, call 716-434-7433 or email info@niagarahistory.org.
