As we approach the general election this November, I want to remind every eligible voter in Western New York how important it is to confirm your registration and make sure your voice is heard.

Too often, people think of elections only in terms of high-profile races for governor or president. But right here in our own communities, this ballot will include vital contests for local governments, school boards and county seats. These offices directly affect our daily lives – everything from the quality of our children’s education, to how our tax dollars are spent, to the services we count on in our neighborhoods.

Local elections are decided by some of the narrowest margins. A few votes – or even a single vote – can shape the direction of our towns, counties and schools for years to come. That’s why checking your registration status now is one of the most powerful things you can do. If you’ve moved, changed your name, or haven’t voted in a while, you may need to update your information.

The League of Women Voters of Buffalo Niagara (LWVBN) offers trusted, nonpartisan resources to help. You can visit www.lwvbn.org or www.vote411.org to find voter registration tools, deadlines, candidate information, and election guides. And if you’d like to make an even greater impact, consider joining the League as a member. Together, we can empower voters and defend democracy in Western New York.

Voting is both a right and a responsibility. Western New York has a proud history of civic engagement, and this election is no exception. Let’s all do our part by making sure we’re registered, showing up at the polls, and shaping the future of our communities together.
