Crisis Services Press Release

Crisis Services remains committed to the needs of our community. Crisis Services recognizes locally and nationally reported deaths by suicide. Below are some national statistics about suicide deaths.

•According to provisional data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an estimated 49,449 people died by suicide in the U.S. in 2022, up from 48,183 in 2021 – an increase of approximately 2.6%.

•Globally, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates over 720,000 people die by suicide annually, making it the third‐leading cause of death among young people aged 15-29.

But there is hope: Suicide remains one of the most preventable kinds of death. Suicide affects friends, families, coworkers and communities, and we must work together to prevent suicide. One of the ways to work together is to speak responsibly about suicide. The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP.org) shares their tips for safe media reporting here: https://afsp.org/ethicalreporting/.

We urge individuals to reach out if they or someone they know is thinking about suicide. Call/ text 988 to connect with the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, or call Crisis Services directly at 716-834-3131.
