High school sports roundup: Girls varsity basketball kicks off in Niagara Frontier League

The Grand Island Vikings met the Sweet Home Panthers on the road in a nonconference girls basketball game Dec. 9. Here’s what went down:

The Vikings started the first quarter strong, winning the tipoff. Taking advantage of the Vikings two shot attempts, the Panthers made a defensive rebound. Vikings senior guard Rebekah Dolan came in with a steal and added the first point to the board, 3-0. The Panthers had a free throw adding one point on the board. The Vikings continued their offensive lead with a lay-up. The Panthers found a gap in the Vikings defense allowing them to catch up on the board, 5-3. The Vikings took an offensive turn around, which led to their advances on net.

Testing the Vikings led to the Panthers offensive chance, closing the scoring gap by a single point 6-5. The Panthers stacked the Vikings, which strengthened their offensive advances and took the 8-5 lead. The Vikings were quick to respond finding a gap in the Panthers defense which bridged the gap 8-7.

With a fast break the Panthers continued to lead at the end of the first quarter. In response, the Vikings turned up their defense preventing the Panthers from making an offensive advance. Dolan intercepted the ball and passed to senior guard Kennedy Ulrich, who had a taste of the hoop. With a free throw, the Panthers sealed their 16-7 lead in the first quarter.

The Panthers stormed into the second quarter testing the Vikings defense. The Panthers made a free throw and continued their 17-7 lead. The Vikings responded by boxing out the Panthers and gained possession. Dolan had a fast break and raced down the court adding the Vikings first point to the second quarter. Quick to respond, the Panthers bit at the Vikings heels, which led to a successful layup. With the ball in the Panthers possession, the Vikings played with physicality. Leaning on their defense, the Vikings kept the Panthers in their own zone and made a basket, playing catch up on the board. Responding to the Panthers fast break, Dolan made a successful layup.

The Vikings developed momentum in the Panthers zone. With a pass made to Dolan she weaved around the Panthers defense and scored. With the Panthers in the lead, the Vikings defensive wall prevented any plays from advancing. The Vikings had a chance to catch up with a layup made by junior guard Mackenzie Gallagher, 23-18. With another free throw, the Panthers continued the 28-18 lead at the end of the second quarter.

The Vikings began the third quarter with possession. The Panthers fought back with defensive power and scored 32-18. In a swift response, sophomore guard/forward Mia McGowan made a layup, adding to the board. The Vikings continued offensive dominance when senior guard/forward Hannah Simpson scored, the Vikings behind 32-23.

In the middle of the third quarter the Panthers matched the Vikings defensive energy. The Vikings had a chance to catch up with a fast break by Simpson, the Vikings 32-26. With a turnover made by the Vikings, the Panthers scored. The Panthers continued their offensive attacks, but the Vikings pushed back defensively. The Vikings made a free throw, which helped them to bridge the gap, 34-30. McGowan pushed past the Panthers defense, extending the Vikings offensive momentum.

The Vikings continued communicating at the end of the third quarter. Gallagher passed to Dolan and Dolan passed to McGowan who scored, tying the game 34-34. The Panthers concluded the third quarter with a free throw, running away from the Vikings on the scoreboard.

The fourth quarter opened with the Panthers scoring and continued the 38-34 lead. The Vikings responded with McGowan weaving through the Panthers defense and made a layup, the Vikings on the board 38-36. The Panthers wore down on the Vikings defense, but the Vikings were quick to recover. The Panthers took possession and scored. With another fast break, the Panthers offense rushed past the Vikings and scored 42-36. The Panthers continued to dodge the Vikings defense taking another scoring chance. The Vikings had a fast break and Dolan passed to senior guard Maya Rizzo who scored. With multiple fast breaks the Panthers continued to lead 52-38.

The Panthers continued to block any scoring attempts the Vikings made at the end of the fourth quarter. With fire in her belly, Dolan responded to the Panthers with a weave and layup, the score 56-40. The Panthers had another fast break and scored. The Vikings closed the quarter with another layup but were defeated by the Panthers, 60-43.

Standout players:

•Rebekah Dolan, senior guard, controlled the offense and had different scoring opportunities.

•Mia McGowan, sophomore guard/forward, made numerous contribution efforts to the scoreboard throughout the game.

•Hannah Simpson, senior guard/forward, knocked down a couple shots taking advantage of scoring opportunities.

History:

The Vikings stood in seventh place in the 2024-25 Section 6 Niagara Frontier Basketball League. They had an overall record of 5-16-0-0. With a few nonconference games under their belts in the 2025-26 season, they continue in conference action.

Niagara Wheatfield

The Niagara Wheatfield Falcons defeat the Lockport Lions on the road Dec. 12. Here’s what went down:

The first quarter started with the Falcons winning the tipoff. The Falcons leaned on their defense when the Lions were in their zone. The Falcons stole the ball and scored, putting the first point on the board 3-0. Quick to gain possession, sophomore forward Elie Fox ran down the court and passed to sophomore guard Lillian Specht. Specht missed the hoop, but Fox was quick to grab the ball made a layup and scored. The Falcons continued to have scoring chances in the Lions zone. The Lions fired a response and made a layup, the score 5-3.

The Falcons made swift passes to each other to get a taste of the hoop. Having missed their second set in their free throw, the Lions took advantage and ran into the Falcons zone. The Lions took another shot attempt and missed. The Falcons projected their aggression and intercepted the ball from the Lions. Junior guard Gracie Pilato ran up the court passed to senior guard Hannah Idzik, who had a taste of the hoop. Following, the Lions called a time out.

The game resumed, Fox received a pass and scored. The Falcons turned up the energy and took another shot, the score 9-6. The Falcons continued to make plays. Idzik passed to Fox and Fox passed to Specht who scored. Making passes once more, the Falcons scored. Shortly after, the Lions put a stop to the Falcons offense. The Falcons make one of the sets in their free throw, 16-6. The Lions made more passes struggling to find and open pocket in the Falcons defense. The ball returned to the Falcons, not long after the Lions made an offensive turn around and ran into the Falcons zone.

Throughout the first quarter, the Falcons talked with each other to see who was open. The Falcons offensive attempts lead to the Lions running into the Falcons zone. The first quarter ended 16-6 with the Falcons in the lead.

The Lions started the second quarter with the ball and scored. The Lions, with possession, made a pass fake but ran into the Falcons zone unsuccessfully. With a foul on the Falcons, the Lions held onto the ball and turned up the heat with two shot attempts. The Lions made a basket from underneath the hoop. The Falcons responded with a layup and continued their lead 18-10.

A pass was made to Fox and she scored. The Falcons remained in the Lions zone. Pilato and Idzik took their time to develop plays. The Lions intercepted the ball and made a couple pass fakes and had a shot attempt. The Falcons intercepted the ball. Sophomore center Lila Giannantonio passed to Specht who made a shot attempt, but the ball went out of bounds. The Lions had a free throw and made one of their sets, making the score 20-11. With a rebound, Giannantonio scored. The Lions had another free throw and made one out of their three sets. Intercepting the ball. Freshman forward Gia Watson scored at the end of the second quarter.

The third quarter began with the Lions had possession. Taking advantage of their offensive opportunity, the Lions made fluid passes. The Falcons had the ball but were intercepted. The Lions ran into their opponent’s zone. With an interception, the Falcons controlled the ball, but it was short-lived. Due to a violation against the Falcons, the Lions had the ball. The Falcons intercepted ready to take shot, but the Lions blocked them from scoring. The Lions had a free throw and made one of the two sets.

Using that missed opportunity to their advantage, the Falcons nudged through the Lions defense but were stopped. Fox intercepted the ball and the Lions defense stuck on her. The Lions advanced with their offensive approach, but were intercepted by Watson. The middle of the third quarter remained scoreless until the Lions put 24-16 on the board.

Trying to control the game and their lead, the Falcons called a timeout. The Lions had the ball, and the Falcons were quick to intercept. The Falcons disrupted the Lions rhythm, boxing them out. Giannantonio retrieved the ball and scored, adding the Falcons first point to the third quarter. Idzik stayed with the ball, deflecting the Lions defense and attempted a shot. Threatened, the Lions followed up and scored. The Falcons responded by pressing the Lions with their offense and scored, ending the third quarter 29-19.

The Falcons started the fourth quarter with the ball. The Lions intercepted and ran into the Falcons zone but were blocked. After a timeout made by the Falcons, the Lions earned possession due to a violation. The Lions had a free throw allowing them to catch up on the board 29-20. The Falcons had the ball. Remembering to pass, they developed a play and scored. The Lions were quick to respond and got a taste of the hoop.

Following a timeout made by the Lions, they continued to make passes, but the Falcons defense pushed them out of their zone. The Lions developed another play, but the Falcons intercepted on the defensive rebound. The Lions were tired but persevered and made shot attempts. The Falcons pushed offensively, stole the ball scored, 34-20. The Lions had a free throw, and the Falcons tried to intercept the ball, but the Lions stole it back. With another free throw by the Lions, they put 33-22 on the board.

At the end of the fourth quarter, the Lions had another free throw chance. The Falcons took possession of the ball and scored in response. With another chance for the Falcons, sophomore guard Gianna Burkhardt scored defeating the Lions 38-23.

Standout players:

•Elie Fox, sophomore forward, ran the offense and defense, communicating well as the Falcons captain on the court.

•Lillian Specht, sophomore guard, was the top scorer in the battle against the Lions.

•Lila Giannantonio, sophomore center, worked as the defensive anchor in the matchup.

History:

The Falcons stand in third place in the Niagara Frontier League in the 2025-26 season. They started the season with one win and two losses prior to their matchup against the Lions. The Falcons host Lewiston Porter Dec. 16 with the tipoff at 6:30 p.m.
