Free certification training begins this weekend

Mayor Sean Ryan announced the City of Buffalo is actively recruiting lifeguards for the 2026 summer season, and encouraging residents of all ages to apply as Buffalo works to expand swimming opportunities and aquatic programming at public pools this summer.
The city is seeking both experienced lifeguards and those interested in becoming certified for the first time. City of Buffalo lifeguards earn $20 per hour, while supervising lifeguards earn $22 per hour.
For Buffalo residents ages 16 to 21, lifeguard certification training is free. Trainings will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 14, 15, 21, 22 and 28 at the Connors, Kait, Harrity Memorial Pool (Cazenovia Park Pool) at 626 Abbott Road.
Those interested in becoming lifeguards must complete four of the five certification classes offered through the training program. More certification classes may be added based on need.
“This summer will be here before we know it, and we’re working hard to build the lifeguard staff we need to open our pools and offer more programming for Buffalo families,” Ryan said. “This is a great opportunity to earn money, learn CPR, and serve your community. And if we’re able to hire 100 certified lifeguards this season, I’ll jump into the Cazenovia Park pool in a suit!”
The City of Buffalo is working to strengthen aquatic programming this summer by offering more structured and constructive swimming opportunities for residents across its public pools.
