As March winds down, drivers are feeling renewed pressure at the pump as the national average for regular gasoline continues its sharp climb, fueled by rising seasonal demand and the ongoing conflict involving Iran. Over the past several weeks, prices have surged on the back of elevated crude oil costs, increased road travel, and broader geopolitical uncertainty. Crude prices remain stubbornly high as the conflict approaches its fourth week, pushing the national average toward the $4-per-gallon mark for the first time since August 2022. Spring break travel is also ramping up, adding another layer of upward pressure on pump prices.

According to the latest data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA), gasoline demand increased last week from 8.72 million b/d to 8.92 million. Total domestic gasoline supply decreased from 244 million barrels to 241.4 million. Gasoline production increased last week, averaging 9.7 million barrels per day.

Diesel prices have also escalated. The national average is $5.42 – up 13 cents – while the New York average is $5.75 – up 22 cents in the past week.

When it comes to EV charging, the national and state averages for L2 commercial electricity remain steady. Today’s national average per kilowatt hour of electricity at a public EV charging station remains at 42 cents. New York’s rate is 41 cents, up 1 cent from last week. The state is home to 19,474 chargers. An estimated 1.2 million AAA members live in households with one or more electric vehicles.

To conserve fuel, motorists should map routes, avoid peak traffic times like rush hour, and combine errands into one trip while using cruise control when possible. Drivers should also make sure tire pressure is at the vehicle’s recommended level for the best gas mileage, while removing any unnecessary and bulky items from the car since it takes more fuel to accelerate a heavy vehicle. Motorists can benefit from comparing pump prices before filling up with the AAA mobile app for iPhone, iPad and Android.
