The Niagara History Center is continuing its free family night series with an Erie Canal-themed program to celebrate the opening of the 2026 season from 6-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 27, at the Erie Canal Discovery Center, 24 Church St., Lockport.
The activities will begin at 6 p.m. with an introduction in front of the Raphael Beck mural, “The Opening of the Erie Canal, Lockport, October 26, 1825.” A 15-minute movie about the construction of the Flight of Five Locks will be shown and families will have the opportunity to explore the museum exhibits. At 6:30 p.m., children can decorate and cut out a small canal boat to take home with them. This will be followed by a few games of “Erie Canal Bingo” with small prizes given away to the winners. There will then be more time to look at the exhibits and children can play in the “Canal Kids Corner.” Specialty cookies will be served starting at 7 p.m. in the lobby of the Discovery Center.
This program is free and open to families with children ages 5 and up. The activities are appropriate for children who have completed kindergarten through middle school. For more information or to register a family, call the Niagara History Center at 716-434-7433 or email info@niagarahistory.org.
