Oil prices drop slightly, gas prices plateau after last week’s jump

The national average price for a gallon of gasoline is $4.10, down 1 cent from last Monday. One year ago, the price was $3.15. The New York state average is $4.22, also down 1 cent from last Monday. A year ago, the NYS average was $3.17.

AAA Western and Central New York (AAA WCNY) reports the following averages:

• Batavia – $4.28 (up 1 cent from last Monday)
• Buffalo – $4.28 (down 1 cent from last Monday)
• Elmira – $4.15 (no change from last Monday)
• Ithaca – $4.26 (no change from last Monday)
• Rochester – $4.27 (down 2 cents from last Monday)
• Rome – $4.33 (down 1 cent from last Monday)
• Syracuse – $4.23 (down 2 cents from last Monday)
• Watertown – $4.26 (down 3 cents from last Monday)

The national average for a gallon of regular gasoline is down 1 cent from last week, now sitting at $4.10. As of this morning, crude oil prices sit at an average of $80 per barrel, down from last week’s $85 to $90 range, while instability lingers along the Strait of Hormuz. Gas prices are nearly a dollar higher than they were this time last year. Typically, August brings some relief at the pump as road trips wind down and fall routine gets underway for many families, but elevated crude oil prices could prevent that seasonal shift from starting just yet.

According to the latest data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA), gasoline demand increased last week while total domestic gasoline supply remained flat and gasoline production increased.

Diesel prices are up this week, with the national average at $5.36, up 6 cents from last week. Last year at this time, the national average price for diesel fuel was $3.74. The New York average for diesel fuel is $5.63, up 4 cents from last week, and up from $3.92 last year.

When it comes to EV charging, the national average for L2 commercial electricity remains steady. Today’s national average per kilowatt-hour of electricity at a public EV charging station is 42 cents. New York’s rate is 41 cents. The state is home to 20,585 chargers. An estimated 1.2 million AAA members live in households with one or more electric vehicles. To conserve fuel, motorists should map routes, avoid peak traffic times like rush hour, and combine errands into one trip while using cruise control when possible. Drivers should also make sure tire pressure is at the vehicle’s recommended level for the best gas mileage, while removing any unnecessary and bulky items from the car, since it takes more fuel to accelerate a heavy vehicle.
