The annual Tuscarora Heroes Park "garden mob" will be out in force during Lewiston's Earth Day spring cleanup at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 21, at the corner of Portage Road and Center Street in Lewiston. The group is inviting new volunteers to join the effort to help keep Lewiston's pocket park a showcase for visitors - just dress for the weather and bring gloves.

The Niagara County Water District has announced that, on Tuesday, April 17, it will conduct a scheduled drinking water transmission shutdown maintenance operation in northern parts of Niagara County. The maintenance is expected to affect the towns of Royalton, Ridgeway, Somerset, Hartland, Lockport, Newfane and Shelby, as well as the villages of Barker, Middleport and Medina.

The annual Home Assistance Referral Team fundraiser returns to the Lewiston Event Center tonight. From 6-10 p.m. guests can mingle with celebrities, try their hand at basket and 50/50 raffles, and watch the Lewiston-Porter Jazz Ensemble perform. Headlining the benefit event is the Summer of '69 All-Star Band, joined by special guest Gary Baker.

Niagara County Sheriff James R. Voutour has announced the new addition to the sheriff's office canine team has been named in honor of Chief Craig C. Harmon, who was the chief of the Niagara County Drug Task Force when he passed away in 2004. The new canine, Chief, is currently in training with handler Deputy Richard Bull. He was purchased through many generous donations and funding from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

The Battles of Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775, launched the American Revolution. This history will be retold and re-enacted on April 21 and 22 at Old Fort Niagara.

The Village of Youngstown and Town of Porter announce a tire collection day will take place from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday, April 21. A Dumpster for tires, with or without rims, will be available at the Youngstown Village Center parking lot, 240 Lockport St., for village and Porter residents.

Lewiston's Memorial Day Remembrance Committee met Thursday at the Veterans Memorial in Academy Park, the site of the upcoming Memorial Day Ceremony. Members brought the honors banner from the 2017 event and said they were very pleased to note last year's great sponsors have all signed up again to support this community event again in 2018.

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on Monday announced the Town of Newfane and the Village of Barker in Niagara County have been awarded $615,083 in Lake Ontario flood relief funds to support restoration resiliency efforts following last year's flooding, and to protect the community from the damage of future storms. The state has committed $55 million to recovery efforts to support homeowners, small businesses and community infrastructure.
