At the recent Niagara County Farm Bureau luncheon, President Jim Bittner presented New York State Sen. Rob Ortt, Assemblyman Mike Norris and Assemblyman Angelo Morinello with the Circle of Friends Award. This honor is given to legislators whose votes reflect New York Farm Bureau's priorities.

The annual Youngstown/Town of Porter Community Holiday Baskets project has been declared a great success this year. Scores of volunteers worked a village-townwide collection campaign from Dec. 11-16 at the Red Brick Village Center gym. Through the efforts and the donations of many, 50 families received food boxes, and over 90 children received clothing and toy items.

The Kiwanis Club of Lewiston recently presented the Mount St. Mary's Hospital Foundation with a check for $5,000. The funds were from the club's annual clambake, which is dedicated to long-time Kiwanian Steve Washuta and the Steve Washuta Cardiac Center at Mount St. Mary's Hospital.

United Way of Greater Niagara on Friday received a $5,000 check from Northwest Bank. Northwest Senior Vice President and North District Manager Lena Prohaska, Vice President and Community Relationship Officer Trina Burruss and Lewiston Branch Manager Gloria Baker presented the check to United Way of Greater Niagara President and CEO Connie Brown.

The First Presbyterian Church of Lewiston will open its doors on Christmas Eve to all members of the Greater Niagara Community. The church, established on Jan. 20, 1817, is the oldest in the Village of Lewiston and celebrated its 200th anniversary this year.

Thanks to artists from Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara, several walls at Mount St. Mary's Hospital are now adorned with artwork. Displays have been placed in four separate areas for the enjoyment of physicians, staff and visitors. Some of the artists recently visited the hospital to view the displays.

Trustees in the Village of Lewiston voted Monday to approve a change to the municipal sign code. Intent on helping people spot local businesses from the street, the board voted unanimously to modify the projecting sign size from two square feet up to a maximum of six square feet.

The New York Power Authority kicked off its annual Festival of Trees last weekend as part of its "Deck the Halls" event. Visitors can now view more than 60 colorful trees, which are spread out across the two-building Niagara Power Vista at the Niagara Power Project.

Almost two-dozen Village of Lewiston residents came to the Zoning Board of Appeals meeting Tuesday night to oppose a dimensional variance request for a new build at lot No. 210 on South Third Street. Many hands were raised to voice an opinion but, before anyone had a chance to speak, ZBA Chairman H. John Ritter essentially took the words out of their mouths. He said he couldn't vote in favor of a municipal code alteration, which, he said, would "devalue" the neighboring properties.

As part of a holiday luncheon program on Tuesday, the Lewiston Senior Center donated dozens of presents to needy Lewiston-Porter Central School District families, and even more canned goods to the Heart, Love & Soul Food Pantry in Niagara Falls. In addition, scarves were given to the Youngstown Porter Community Christmas Baskets program.

Cub Scout Pack No. 855 enjoyed a fun and educational meeting on Thursday, Dec. 7, when Jennifer Grier, marketing specialist with Greater Niagara FCU, was invited for an interactive financial literacy workshop. The scouts learned the importance of saving money and making a plan for future purchases "Avengers" style.

The Town of Porter recently paid tribute to The Lewiston-Porter Sentinel for the paper's 30th anniversary of serving the River Region. Town Supervisor Mert Wiepert and the Porter Town Board recognized publisher Skip Mazenauer and The Sentinel with a proclamation at a November meeting.
