Friends of the Ransomville Library will hold a used book sale Friday, Feb. 7, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday, Feb. 8, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (with a bag sale from 3 to 4 p.m.), at the Ransomville Library, 3733 Ransomville Road.

Eighty-seven school districts - 13 percent of school districts statewide - have been designated as fiscally stressed under State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli's Fiscal Stress Monitoring System, in a report released this week.
And Lewiston-Porter has the unfavorable distinction of being ranked the second-worst school district in New York state in terms of "significant fiscal stress," the report finds.
DiNapoli's office evaluated 674 school districts with fiscal years ending on June 30, 2013.

Ransomville Speedway has announced the return of several sponsors for the 2014 season. With the 14th annual Hangover 150 in the books, Big R has set its sights on preparing for Friday, April 25, and the annual test, tune and time night. The 57th season opener is slated for Friday, May 2.
Mike Greenawalt and Investors Service Company will return for the upcoming season in several capacities.

Congressman Brian Higgins is writing to the U.S. chair of the International Joint Commission calling for an investigation into what led to an ice jam buildup and flooding along the Niagara River during the blizzard that hit the Western New York area. Higgins' request is aimed at preventing potential tragedies in the future.

On the heels of Gov. Andrew Cuomo's announcement of a multibillion-dollar infrastructure improvement plan for the new York, State Sen. George Maziarz, R-C-Newfane, is strongly urging monies from this initiative be directed to Niagara County to help repair and upgrade the Niagara Falls and Lockport wastewater treatment plants.

The New York Power Authority and Ontario Power Generation ice breakers have been working since midnight this morning to break ice jams along the upper Niagara River. The Niagara River Control Center - part of OPG - issued a flood warning at 9:20 a.m. Ice conditions and water levels are being closely monitored.
