Town of Porter Historian Suzanne Simon Dietz will host a reception during the Holiday in the Village celebration Saturday, Dec. 14, in the Porter Historical Museum, located in the Red Brick School Village Center, 240 Lockport St., Youngstown. Students at Stella Niagara Education Park spent weeks collecting returnable plastic bottles in order to raise $300 to provide clean water for people in a developing nation. Through Heifer International, SNEP is donating the funds to purchase a treadle pump that will help to irrigate fields.

A record number of runners in The Mighty Niagara Half Marathon traveled safely through Lewiston thanks, in part, to Lewiston Volunteer Fire Co. No. 1. Paul Beatty, race chairman of The Mighty Niagara Half Marathon and Hospice Dash 5K, recently recognized the fire company with a thank you plaque.

The public-access fishing pier at the base of the New York Power Authority's Robert Moses Niagara Power Plant, the main generating facility at the Niagara Hydroelectric Power Plant, will close for the winter season Monday, Dec. 9. Weather permitting, it will still be open this weekend, Dec. 7-8.

U.S. News & World Report has listed Mount St. Mary's Hospital for successfully implementing a higher standard of care for stroke patients through the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association's Get With The Guidelines-Stroke quality improvement program.
