It was a beautiful fall morning when the lives of Carmen Presti and his wife, Christie, would change forever. The caregivers and "parents" of Charlie the Chimp were by his side day and night during the last days of his life before his passing on Nov. 4 at the home of The Primate Sanctuary in Niagara Falls.

On Monday, under the watchful eye of site contractor Rocco DelGrosso and members of the Historical Association of Lewiston, the Tuscarora Heroes monument was installed on Center Street. Statues of three Native Americans, representing the Tuscarora nation, were planted in a park that pays tribute to "Tuscarora Heroes" - the brave men and women who rushed Lewiston residents out of the village during the 1813 British invasion.

More than 700 area students came to Old Fort Niagara Nov. 1 to participate in French Heritage Day. The students learned about life at the fort during the French period from re-enactors portraying the people from all nations who would have been in the area at this time.

Nine hundred kids get on and off the buses at the Lewiston-Porter Primary and Intermediate schools each day. Imagine kids jumping off buses, running and weaving toward the buildings with smaller ones caught in the frenzy.

On Friday evening, Nov. 15, Old Fort Niagara will present a special evening lantern tour focused on the 17th century history of the site. The tour will recount the explorations of LaSalle and the construction of forts Conti and Denonville during the final quarter of the 17th century. Tour participants will also get an up-close look at daily life for those who accompanied LaSalle on his bold explorations of the Great Lakes.

The Jack Beatty Cruise and Clambake has become one of the most popular summer events in Niagara County. This year, in the 14th anniversary of the event, a record $38,000 was raised to benefit Niagara Hospice.

The Lewiston Police Department recently received a pharmaceutical drop-off box from the Niagara County Refuse Department. LPD Chief Chris Salada reports area residents can now visit the Lewiston Police Department at 4059 Creek Road between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and leave their unwanted medications.

The Lewiston Community Lions Club's fifth annual peace poster contest was recently held at the Stella Niagara Education Park. The event, chaired by Lion Marlene Craft and Lion's President Ron Craft, boated 58 entries from Stella Niagara, St. Peter's Roman Catholic and St. Peter's Lutheran schools. This year's theme for the contest was "Our World, Our Future."

Assemblyman John Ceretto recently sponsored a breast cancer screening event in conjunction with the Western New York Breast Health Mobile Mammography Coach at the Mount Zion Baptist Church in Niagara Falls. The event was done as a part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month to provide breast cancer screenings to women who might otherwise not be able to obtain them.

Both the Village of Lewiston Planning Board and Board of Trustees have given approval to the DiMino family to expand the Colonial Valley Plaza on Center and South Eighth streets. An 11,056-square-foot addition will be built on the CVS lot's west side, and will house between one and three tenants.

Lewiston resident Angelo Sarkees had a simple idea. Seeing the many bottles and cans people simply toss into the garbage, especially at large outdoor events, he began the "Deposits for Food" initiative to collect those pieces and turn them into cash for local charities.

When sitting in the coffee shop one Friday morning, I got a cell phone call from "Big Joe" asking if I wanted to go fishing the river that morning. After a "quick think," my wife said, "Go, get going; you don't need to do anything today." She was right; the only thing I needed to do was to go fishing. I'm always happy to go when Big Joe calls, I've known him all his life, and he turned out to be a darned good fisherman.

The New York Power Authority will recognize the "Hard Hats of Niagara" on Monday, Oct. 28, at 11 a.m., at the Power Vista, the visitors center for the Niagara Hydroelectric Plant. The occasion will mark the 50th anniversary of the construction of the Power Vista and will mark the attendance milestone of welcoming 7 million visitors since the facility first opened its doors in 1963.
At the event, representatives of NYPA senior management will honor the "Hard Hats of Niagara," a group of former construction workers who built the power plant and the Power Vista.
