Assemblyman John Ceretto, R-I-Lewiston, on Tuesday denounced a plan that would place a new tax on every firearm currently owned by New Yorkers and establish a levy on future firearm purchases. Ceretto called Senate bill S.2994 an egregious attack on the Second Amendment and demanded that lawmakers from both parties defeat the legislation.

Rivershore Inc., in partnership with The Family & Friends Down Syndrome Association of Niagara, held events Monday to promote the sixth annual World Down Syndrome Day. The keynote speaker was renowned musician Sujeet Desai. The instrumentalist, who has performed around the world and with performers including Kenny G., spoke on how individuals with Down syndrome lead happy, productive and meaningful lives.

The Lewiston-Porter School District is facing a 4.2 percent increase in its 2011-12 budget that in normal times would not be a major problem. However with New York state calling for a reduction in state aid to Lew-Port of $2.3 million, the increase will have to be made up within the district. Lew-Port's proposed budget for 2011-12 is $41,779,619, up $1,684,961 from 2010-11.

The Barton Hill Hotel & Spa is still closed following a fire Monday afternoon at the 78-room Village of Lewiston inn. Owner Diane Finkbeiner said her business is "performing safety and maintenance checks in the best interests of ... staff and guests." She said her hope is that the Center Street hotel will reopen as soon as possible.

Congresswoman Louise Slaughter, 28th District, Fairport, has announced two grants from the federal government totaling more than $340,000 that will benefit Western New York fire companies. The Rochester Fire Department is set to receive more than $252,000 and the Youngstown Volunteer Fire Co. will be awarded $91,756 for equipment and training activities.

About 2:30 p.m. today, smoke billowing through a first floor room at the Barton Hill Hotel & Spa in Lewiston triggered a quick response from local fire companies. Trucks rushed to the scene as firefighters rushed into the four-story building to assess the damage. As of the 8 p.m. check-in, there was no official word as to what caused smoke to engulf the room.

Jeannine Alsous earned a presidential scholarship, an academic competitiveness grant and other merit-based awards from her efforts as an honors student at Lewiston-Porter High School. To help pay her way through college, she lives at home with her single mother, works between 30 and 40 hours a week, and takes out approximately $5,000 in Stafford Loans.

The Village of Lewiston Board of Trustees is still struggling with whether or not to charge festival organizers a fee to cover safety and maintenance costs. At Monday's work session, Mayor Terry Collesano revealed the community's seven summer festivals cost the municipality almost $4,200 in Department of Public Works labor, and upwards of $11,000 in police services.

Lewiston resident Keith M. Fox announced his intention this week to run for a seat on the Lewiston-Porter Board of Education in the May 17 elections. Fox, a former Lew-Port School Board member and board president, bowed out of running in the Lew-Port board elections last year, citing health reasons.

The 42nd Olcott Polar Bear Day Swim for Sight was held Sunday, March 6, in Olcott Beach. Overnight snow and a raw wind from the north kept the crowd down a bit from past years, but 744 swimmers braved three-foot waves and a 35-degree water temperature to raise money for the Olcott Lions Club.

Town of Lewiston Councilman Mike Marra outlined a plan Monday to radically transform Marilyn Toohey Park behind the Red Brick Municipal Building on North Fourth Street. He presented a packet of information to the Village of Lewiston Board of Trustees detailing the creation of a new playground, a refurbished basketball court and a standalone unisex bathroom.
