Village of Lewiston trustees plan to use their next four work session meetings to discuss several of the larger issues looming over the municipality. At 6 p.m. on Mondays, Feb. 7, March 7, April 4 and May 2, the Village Board will address topics including food collections, festivals on Center Street, the Piper Law Office Welcome Center, right-of-ways, the Water Pollution Control Center, the upper plateau and the Local Waterfront Revitalization Program.

Youngstown Mayor Neil Riordan has announced the village will hold a community meeting to discuss the recent wave of break-ins and burglaries hitting local residences. Open to the public, the session will be held Tuesday, Feb. 8, at 7 p.m., in the trustees' boardroom at the Red Brick School Village Center, 240 Lockport St.

In the end, the Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours controversy boiled down to one thing and one thing only: a roughly 2,580-square-foot expansion. Despite the objections Monday night of a handful of people who claimed the tourism business is a bad neighbor, the Village of Lewiston Board of Trustees said the only issue members were interested in was the $1 million, two-story addition proposal that sat before them. Finding nothing wrong with the plan, the board approved it by a 4-0 measure.

Assemblyman John Ceretto, R, I, 138th District, Lewiston, this week joined several Assembly and Senate colleagues in announcing new legislation that will make it a crime for any elected official to knowingly destroy "open" constituent case files. The legislation, which carries penalties of up to one year in jail and a $25,000 fine, intends to prevent outgoing legislators from destroying existing constituent case files of new members.

Edward and Diane Finkbeiner will continue to own and operate the Barton Hill Hotel & Spa in Lewiston under the terms of an agreement reached Thursday in a special term of the New York State Supreme Court. Justice Richard C. Kloch Sr. denied a request by CIT Lending Services Corporation/Iddleson Group to place the four-story Center Street hotel in receivership provided the Finkbeiners pay $30,000 in past-due mortgage payments on the 13th of each month.

At its Jan. 6 reorganization meeting, the Lewiston Town Board opted for a new direction in the assessor's office. The change comes following last month's resignation letter by Acting Assessor Gene J. Virtuoso, who since 2005 has been serving in that role on a part-time basis. "I am submitting my resignation as part-time Acting Assessor effective Jan. 5, 2011 due to personal reasons," wrote Virtuoso on Dec. 10, 2010, to Supervisor Steve Reiter and Town Board members.

The Niagara County Industrial Development Agency announced this week it has accepted applications for assistance from Hamilton, Ontario-based HT Production for a proposed corrugated box manufacturing facility in Lewiston, Wheatfield Family Density for the construction for a new dental office, as well as the construction of a new medical practice building in the Town of Newfane. The projects total more than $2 million in investment in Niagara County and the creation of 20 full time jobs and nine part-time positions.
