The Youngstown Business and Professional Association has been named the recipient of a $3,000 check from the William G. Mayne Jr. Business and Community Enhancement Program. At the tail end of Monday's Village of Lewiston Board meeting, after trustees returned from executive session, a motion was passed extending the deadline for an Article 78 lawsuit to be filed. This action provides Lewiston businessman Jerry Williams an additional 90 days to take legal action contesting variances passed Nov. 17 by the village's Zoning Board of Appeals on behalf of Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours.

The Village of Lewiston has clarified what was sold in its recent transaction with Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours. On Nov. 15, a 197.23-foot parcel of property was sold for $1. Of that land, 101.15 feet is actually under the Water Street Landing restaurant, and not in front of the building.

Three families were each given $5,000 and tasked with creating the most original, most elaborate, most over-the-top holiday display imaginable. The Town of Lewiston announced this week it will hold a Comprehensive Plan update session with representatives of Wendel Duchscherer Engineers on Thursday, Dec. 16, at 3 p.m. at Lewiston Town Hall. Town Supervisor Steve Reiter, along with Town Board members, town attorneys, the town building inspector, plus the town's planning, zoning and environmental chairs, are all expected to attend the meeting, which will discuss the town's master plan. The session is open to the public.

For two nights in December, visitors to Old Fort Niagara will experience the holidays as they were celebrated in early America. Historical characters will bring Christmas past alive with 18th and 19th century holiday recipes and portrayals of colonial-era people. The high point of the evening will be a traditional "feu de joie" (firing of joy), a nighttime musket and cannon salute.

The Old Fort Niagara Association, the not-for-profit organization charged with preserving and maintaining Old Fort Niagara's buildings and programs, launched its 2010 annual fund, titled "Call to Arms," earlier this week. The goal is to raise $120,000 in community support by Dec. 31 to underwrite educational programming and assistance with much-needed preservation projects.
