Border Community SERVICE of Niagara University is hosting a free Citizen and Community Preparedness conference at Niagara University on Saturday, June 12. The "Empowering Volunteers" Conference is designed to provide training opportunities and workshops detailing "best practices" in citizen and community preparedness initiatives. The event is for community volunteers and leaders in Niagara County, Erie County and the City of Buffalo.

Representatives of the Town and Village of Lewiston will meet Monday to discuss funding for the Historic Piper Law Office and Welcome Center. The Host Community Standing Committee informed both parties this week that Greenway money should be allocated to the project via a sponsor, if at all.

The Lake Ontario Ordnance Works Restoration Advisory Board invites area residents to attend the first of its planned series of community presentations on the LOOW Site Wednesday night. To be held at the Lewiston-Porter High School auditorium from 7 to 9:30 p.m., the program, "LOOW Site Radioactive Storage: The Experts Speak," will feature two presentations and a question and answer period on the radiological issues existing in certain areas of the LOOW Site.

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, along with the Old Fort Niagara Association, on Friday unveiled more than $850,000 worth of upgrades to the electrical systems and roofs at the site.

On Thursday, the Board of Trustees backed away from a Lewiston Lions Club proposal to collect charitable contributions inside of Artpark during the "Tuesday in the Park" concert series. Instead, trustees approved a plan wherein volunteers representing Heart, Love and Soul and Community Missions can solicit patrons outside of the performing arts venue's South Fourth Street entrance.

Assemblywoman Francine DelMonte, D-Lewiston, reported this week she is continuing her fight to keep Wilson-Tuscarora and Joe Davis state parks open by pushing for passage of a bill that would keep them operating through the end of the fiscal year, ending March 31, 2011 (A.11013). Specifically, the measure would require the state Office for Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation to use funding allocated to them in the budget extenders to maintain the same level of services provided as last year.

The Lewiston/Niagara-on-the-Lake Rotary Club has presented a $500 donation to the Lewiston Council on the Arts as a token of appreciation and support of community service to Lewiston and the Niagara Region. The Lewiston Council on the Arts and the Village of Lewiston have provided their stamp of approval to the Lewiston/Niagara-on-the-Lake Rotary Club in their hosting of Art of Ribs 2010, which is going to be held in Academy Park the weekend of the 44th annual Lewiston Art Festival, Aug. 14-15. Rotary will donate proceeds from this fundraising event to the Mount St. Mary's Hospital Foundation, Breast Care Center and Maternity Ward.

In observance of the War of 1812, HAL plans to unveil an eight-foot tall bronze monument on Dec. 19, 2013, the 200th anniversary of the siege of Lewiston. The monument will be called "Tuscarora Heroes." Youngstown artist Susan Geissler designed the project, estimated to cost between $350,000 and $400,000.

With 54 percent of the vote, mayoral candidate Terry Collesano was endorsed Tuesday by the Village of Lewiston Republican Party. The 20-year trustee outpolled Bill Geiben, who was selected mayor in November 2009.
"I'm just overwhelmed," Collesano said after the vote result was announced. "I just want to thank everyone. Thank you.

Recently, the Village of Lewiston, Artpark & Co., and New York's Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation have discussed the possibility of opening a new exit leading from the performing arts venue to the Robert Moses Parkway south (Niagara Falls). In this scenario, patrons exiting Artpark via Portage Road could turn right on Seneca Street (shown left) and onto the RMP. This new connection, only available during the "Tuesday in the Park" concert series, would be the only way for motorists to access the parkway. Center Street to the RMP would be closed.

Despite the threat - real or perceived - that the state Department of Taxation and Finance could seize control of the 72-room inn, the establishment remained open and under the operational control of owners Ed and Diane Finkbeiner.

Acting State Supreme Court Justice Richard C. Kloch Sr. has dismissed the case brought against the Village of Lewiston and Hastings Lewiston by PSR Press. Developer Richard Hastings is once again free to develop the property he owns surrounding the historic Frontier House.

A motion to dismiss the PSR Press lawsuit against Richard Hastings, his hired architects, and the Village of Lewiston was dismissed in state Supreme Court Thursday by Justice Richard Kloch Sr. Hastings' attorney, John P. Bartolomei, filed the motion claiming the petition incorrectly listed the respondents.

A 31-foot Center Street addition and a 50-foot apartment complex on Ridge Street highlight the newest Frontier House sketch, as presented to the Village of Lewiston Planning Board on Monday. Architect Timothy E. Kupinski, RA, of the EI Team, presented the four-person panel with an updated draft of developer Richard Hastings' vision for the dormant historical building.

The Niagara River Greenway Commission unanimously endorsed all 11 plans put forward in the first round of project submissions. At the board's meeting on Tuesday, 10 commissioners and chairman Robert Kresse signed off on proposals ranging from maintenance at Old Fort Niagara to the reconfiguration of green space on Grand Island.

The Niagara River Greenway Plan, which began in 2002 as a bullet point in then-Gov. George Pataki's State of the State address, was signed and approved Thursday by state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Commissioner Carol Ash. The plan, in physical boundary and purpose, is a series of interconnected points stretching from Lake Ontario to Lake Erie. It was created to complement and herald the region's environmental, cultural and industrial heritage.
