During the next several weeks, U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) will conduct the June Agricultural Survey. The agency will contact producers across the region to determine crop acreage and stock levels as of June 1.

What would have been the 15th annual Special Olympics New York's Western Regional Basketball Tournament on the Niagara University campus was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. But that didn't mean that the student coaches and their extraordinary athletes ended their relationship. Instead, the students have used the #Fit5NY Facebook page to post workout routines, healthy recipes and encourage one another to stay fit and motivated.

Family and friends gathered together Monday afternoon at Elderwood Residences at Wheatfield to help Joanne Bodman celebrate her 100th birthday. A drive-by parade took place outside the front door and featured the Bergholz Fire Department, local first responders, friends and admirers.

If you listen to state and county leaders' information, you must be mindful of when we will begin to reopen. Presently, we are still under the governor's "PAUSE" order. As the number of cases in Niagara County continue to rise with 488 and 60 cases being in N.T., we have not reached the peak of infection or are even plateauing. In order to reopen, we need the rate of infection to decrease.

Around this time of year, the beloved bovine is usually overlooking scores of sticky-faced patrons and pineapple-sized ice cream cones at the picnic table below. United Way of Greater Niagara has continued to ramp up funding to support its 29 partner agencies within Niagara County. UWGN recently received grants from National Grid, General Motors and Hypertherm, which will be used to support COVID-19 response efforts related to child care services in the Niagara Region. These grants, along with funding from the Beeman Foundation, will provide funding to Youth Mentoring Services in Lockport and the Niagara Falls Boys and Girls Club, two organizations in the county currently providing day care services for essential workers.

On Monday, the Niagara County Community College Small Business Development Center was awarded a grant from the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation. The grant award total was for $36,300.00, part of the foundation's COVID-19 small business relief fund. Thanks to this timely funding award, the Niagara SBDC will be able to offer Niagara County businesses emergency relief services. These services include expert consultation on e-commerce development, free participation in a multiple-part small business crisis management webinar series, and individual advisement on enhanced marketing sales techniques.

"One thing that we can offer right now is the cloth masks. Last week, we offered those free cloth masks through Niagara County Department of Emergency Management to businesses who needed to give them to their essential workers. We would now like to open that up to all of our area businesses. We gave out over 15,000 masks in the last week through that program. And we now want to offer this to businesses who are starting about their reopening process, and will need them for all of their employees most likely when that occurs."

The Niagara-Wheatfield Board of Education held a virtual board meeting this week where they began tentative budget discussions for the 2020-21 school year. A proposed budget of $77,119,627 shows only a moderate 3.7% increase from last year. However, amidst the uncertainty brought on by COVID-19, board members will have to await the governor's decision regarding the end of the month before they can decide whether or not to move forward with the figures.
