Phew. What a year it's been. Five teams won Niagara Frontier League championships, some teams and athletes reached the state finals; nevertheless, Falcons athletics gave this writer a lot to report on this year. Without further ado, here is the first ever Falcons Flashback Awards for the 2017-18 school year. The Falcons Flashback Awards will pick a most valuable player from each team during the past year, as well as a Best Team Award.

This year's Best of SUNY Student Art Exhibition featured a piece, "Untitled" by Niagara County Community College graduate, Danielle Dirks. The art exhibition showcases work by student artists from across the 64 State University of New York campuses, allowing for a year-round display to be seen by wider audiences at the State University Plaza in Albany, the SUNY Global Center in New York City, and Gov. Andrew Cuomo's office in Washington, D.C. Danielle's piece was selected to receive an honorable mention award and a prize of $500.

Girl Scouts of Western New York recently announced Shavon Scive of North Tonawanda, as a 2018 Gold Award Girl Scout. Scive's project was titled Spreading Awareness Of Childhood Anxiety Disorders and Selective Mutism. Selective mutism is the inability for a child to communicate in social or school settings due to anxiety, but are able to speak where they feel comfortable.

After a two-year hiatus, the Niagara Power pulled off an 8-3 win against the Genesee Rapids at their home opener on Saturday, June 2. Starting pitcher Conrad Voss had seven strikeouts during the game, which remained tied 1-1 from the top of the third inning until the bottom of the sixth. That's when the Power scored five runs and finished off the victory.

Volunteers from various agencies in service to the older adult population from across Niagara County have once again spent the year organizing, soliciting donations and planning a fun-filled, free day for Niagara County residents 55 and up.

The New York Power Authority board of trustees has approved $1.6 million in funding to Moog, one of the world's leading manufacturers of precision control components and systems with locations in Wheatfield and Elma in Western New York. The funding supports the company's creation of 100 jobs and the retention of 50 jobs in Niagara and Erie counties, and is directly tied to Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo's May 2017 announcement that the firm would be expanding in Western New York.

On Tuesday evening, the Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons strolled into Williamsville East High School with one thing on their mind: winning a Class AA Section VI title. Unfortunately, the Falcons were halted by No. 5 Lancaster, as the Legends defeated N-W, 7-5.

This weekend, the Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum's Kiddieland Testing Park will open for the season from noon to 4 p.m., starting Saturday and finishing Monday. Spring hours will be in effect until June 13 - noon - 4 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. Following June 13, summer hours will be in effect - 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday; and noon - 4 p.m., Sundays.

The North Tonawanda Department of Youth, Recreation and Parks in conjunction with the mayor's office, Niagara County Legislature, Niagara River Greenway Committee, and Community Development Office, announced Monday there will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony of the new bandshell at Raymond Klimek Veterans Park. The Carnegie Art Center and Gateway Harbor will host the first Music and Arts Festival of the Tonawandas in Tonawanda and North Tonawanda from July 31 through Aug. 4.
