The Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo - a local nonprofit organization committed to helping individuals, families and organizations make their charitable goals a reality - is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2019. To mark this milestone, the Community Foundation will award $1 million in honor of 12 local change-makers who have made a difference in the lives of Western New Yorkers. Prize-winners will be found through a communitywide nomination process.

Western New Yorkers can help feed their hungry community members while shopping at area grocery stores and retailers participating in the annual "Check Out Hunger" campaign to benefit the Food Bank of WNY. Customers have the option to donate $2, $3 or $5 at the register in order to help the nonprofit and its 317 member agencies provide nutritious food and support to those in need throughout Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie and Niagara counties.

Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz has issued a travel advisory, in effect until further notice, for the City of Buffalo and all of northern Erie County due to a winter storm that could leave snow accumulations of up to 2 feet in some areas by Thursday morning. The entire region will see lake-effect snow, blowing and drifting snow, and extreme cold temperatures and wind chills over the next 36 hours and into Thursday. The travel advisory urges against any unnecessary travel during this period, and using extreme caution if travel is unavoidable.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Monday urged New Yorkers to prepare for snow and cold temperatures that are headed toward the state. Several weather systems are forecast to move through New York through Wednesday, producing up to a foot of snow in many parts of upstate. In addition, an Arctic blast of cold air will move into the state on Wednesday, bringing frigid temperatures and life-threatening wind chills.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Monday announced nearly $4.5 million was awarded to 13 animal shelters and humane societies across the state through the New York State Companion Animal Capital Fund. The funding will support construction, renovation and expansion projects that will enhance animal care and health, and help ensure adoptions for New York's dogs and cats.

On Friday afternoon, the Town of Porter welcomed staff from U.S. Coast Guard Station Niagara to Porter Town Hall for the presentation of donated items to assist personnel during the government shutdown. Town of Porter Supervisor John "Duffy" Johnston said 300 pounds of food collected from the community over the past week was donated.

The Erie County Department of Social Services is offering supports to these furloughed workers with two programs for emergency assistance that furloughed federal workers may qualify for and utilize immediately: emergency temporary assistance and emergency food pantry referral.
