Recently, Alec Adams, of North Tonawanda, was honored by the National Society of High School Scholars. Adams, a senior at Canisius High School, was recognized as one of the top scholars who have demonstrated outstanding leadership, scholarship and community commitment. The announcement was made by NSHSS Founder and Chairman Claes Nobel, a senior member of the family that established the Nobel Prize.

Aug. 8, 2018, will be etched in history as the first time the Flame of Hope was carried in Scotland. Guided by New York State Police Staff Inspector Steven Nigrelli, the final leg of the Law Enforcement Torch Run made its way through the streets of Stirling, as the Flame of Hope was carried into the European Special Olympics Games as part of their 40th anniversary opening ceremony.

U.S. Attorney James P. Kennedy, Jr. announced Monday that Dakkar Young, 23, of Tonawanda, who was convicted of distribution of child pornography, was sentenced to serve 168 months in prison and lifetime supervised release by U.S. District Judge Lawrence J. Vilardo.

USA Niagara Development Corp. (USAN) board of directors met Wednesday and unanimously approved the acquisition of 32 individual properties totaling approximately 11 acres of land in downtown Niagara Falls. The purchase of these properties is made possible through a strategic land acquisition program that is part of Gov. Andrew Cuomo's Buffalo Billion phase two.

After beginning as a modest incentive of $25 million per year in 2004, by 2010 the credit had ballooned to an annual sum of nearly $211 million.

McDonald's announced the company and its franchisees are investing approximately $320 million in New York throughout 2018 and 2019 on the construction and modernization of 360 McDonald's restaurants, transforming the customer experience inside and outside the restaurant. In total, McDonald's and franchisees are investing $6 billion to modernize most U.S. restaurants by 2020, including most restaurants in the Empire State.

The parade will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, on Center Street in Lewiston. Nearly 83 percent of older drivers report never speaking to a family member or physician about their safe driving ability, according to new research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. Of the small percentage of families who do have the often-difficult conversation, 15 percent do so after a crash or traffic infraction has occurred - which could be too late.

The New York Power Authority has issued a request for information to identify potential public and private partnerships that will help address key barriers to electric vehicle expansion in New York state. The RFI also will help maximize the impact of NYPA's recently announced EVolve NY program, which will allocate up to $250 million through 2025 toward accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles across the Empire State.

The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and Principal Pops Conductor John Morris Russell have agreed to extend their contract for three more years after the initial agreement expires in August 2019. Russell will continue to conduct at least five pops programs per season and will take the lead in planning pops programming.
