Thirty years ago this month, Janet Ensminger-Nieman began the Evangelistic E's emergency food pantry out of her Cheektowaga home. Despite undergoing breast cancer surgery over the winter, she is still open for business and, on Saturday, will receive all the donations made to the postal food drive in the 14225 ZIP code.

The New York State Canal Corporation and New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation announced the groundbreaking of new construction on a 2.1-mile stretch of the Erie Canalway Trail in Niagara County and a five-mile section in the Mohawk Valley. When completed, the trails will be major cornerstones toward finishing Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo's Empire State Trail project.

The New York State Senate has passed legislation (S.7372B) to expand the types of educational settings required to report child abuse and increases the professions required to receive training to identify and report abuse. The bill is co-sponsored by Sens. Patrick Gallivan (R-C-I-Elma) Chris Jacobs (R-C-I-60th District) and Michael H. Ranzenhofer (R-C-I-Amherst).

In honor of National Travel & Tourism Week, Destination Niagara USA honored more than 700 employees from the hospitality and tourism sector on Tuesday. A luncheon was held inside the Niagara Falls Conference Center on Old Falls Street. Prizes were awarded, and tourist entities were given booths to provide more information on their respective summer seasons.

The much-anticipated Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center celebrated its grand opening on Friday. The Heritage Center is an experiential museum that reveals authentic stories of Underground Railroad freedom seekers and abolitionists in Niagara Falls.
