Taking 'Strides' to fight diabetes

The Lewiston Lions Club held its first Strides Diabetes Awareness 5K Run/walk on Sunday. A good crowd came out on a chilly morning to take part in a 5K run and walk to raise awareness for diabetes awareness and prevention programs in the area.

DEC announces May 5 opening of fishing season for warmwater fish

Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos announced May 5 marks the opening of the fishing season for many of New York's most popular sportfish, including walleye, northern pike, pickerel and tiger muskellunge. Fishing for these species, especially walleye and pike, can be especially good in cooler periods of early spring, and anglers are encouraged to take advantage of the fishing opportunities across the state.
UB to award President's Medal, honorary degrees

Chris Jacobs partnered with AT&T and Better Business Bureau of Upstate New York to host a free senior scam prevention and cyber security seminar on Friday at the Grand Island Golden Age Center. The event was free and open to the public. It was part of a series of senior events held statewide. More than 75 senior citizens attended the event.

Higgins announces House approval of 5-year FAA reauthorization

On Friday, Congressman Brian Higgins (D-NY-26) and his colleagues in the House of Representatives voted (393-13) to approve the Federal Aviation Administration Reauthorization Act of 2018 (H.R.4). The bill funds the FAA at $104.17 billion annually through 2023.

On March 22, Grand Island resident Paul Leuchner met with I National Aeronautics and Space Administration officials at their Glenn Research Center in Cleveland to take temporary possession of a lunar rock sample from the 1971 Apollo 15 mission. The sample, encased in a solid pyramid of clear Lucite, was being loaned to the Buffalo Geological Society for display at its annual gem and mineral show that weekend.

Jumping right into it, Town Highway Superintendent Dave Trane replied the town's considerable schedule of road related work and repairs is at last underway, with paving delays thus far placed on the prolonged winter type weather conditions.

The New York State Thruway Authority has announced a weekend lane reduction on the North Grand Island Bridge on the Niagara Thruway beginning at 10 p.m. Friday, April 27, through 9 a.m. Sunday, April 29. The work is part of the toll barrier removal process following the transition to cashless tolling at the Grand Island toll plazas in March.

The Health Association of Niagara County Inc. has a 90-year history of caring for and supporting residents of the Niagara County community. This Saturday, from 2-4 p.m. at the Wheatfield Community Center, 2790 Church Road, HANCI will celebrate a book launch and release for its "Faces of Niagara." The publication, being released to the community for the first time on Saturday, celebrates the lives of almost 70 Niagara County residents aged 90 and older.

Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman issued an urgent consumer alert, notifying New Yorkers of a new telephone scam in which consumers receive calls from potential fraudsters impersonating the Chinese Consulate to demand payment in exchange for a package or to prevent punishment from the consulate office. New Yorkers who receive such calls should immediately contact the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at 1-877-FTC-HELP.

On Wednesday, Mayor Paul A. Dyster announced the City of Niagara Falls received $300,000 in grant funding toward recently completed cleanup efforts at 3625 Highland Ave., through National Grid's Economic Development program. The funds were used to assist to redevelopment a 5.5-acre site in a New York state-designated Brownfield Opportunity Area in the Highland Avenue corridor.

The Erie County Department of Social Services has announced that, on Monday, April 30, the office of child support enforcement ("OCSE") will relocate to floor two of the Edward A. Rath county office building (95 Franklin St, Buffalo) from it current location on the seventh floor.
