Lockport Community Television, along with the Lockport Community Cable Commission and Charter Cable, announced this year's scholarship recipients. This year, $12,300 in scholarships was given to 11 recipients.

Technically, the season is spring. But it felt more like winter on Sunday in Lewiston, with an inch of ice covering village and town roads. Still, that didn't deter people from coming out to the annual "Taste of Jazz" fundraiser at the Brickyard Brewing Company on Center Street. The event is a benefit for the Northwest Jazz Festival.

On Saturday afternoon, local high school basketball talent stormed into Niagara Falls High School for the annual PAL/ACE all-star games. The day of basketball included a freshman/sophomore game, as well as a junior/senior game. Each team, for both games, included a mix of the classes. Attendees who showed paid $5 for a ticket and all proceeds earned were donated to the Niagara Police Athletic League.

On Thursday, the Erie County Legislature voted to approve Erie County Clerk Mickey Kearns' request to hire 11 additional civil service employees for the county auto bureaus. The resolution passed through a bipartisan effort. Kearns will use these new positions to add additional Saturday services at the Northtowns Auto Bureau in Tonawanda.

The Niagara County Water District has announced that, on Tuesday, April 17, it will conduct a scheduled drinking water transmission shutdown maintenance operation in northern parts of Niagara County. The maintenance is expected to affect the towns of Royalton, Ridgeway, Somerset, Hartland, Lockport, Newfane and Shelby, as well as the villages of Barker, Middleport and Medina.

To celebrate Earth Day on April 20, National Grid will distribute 1,000 LED light bulbs to individuals who live in the south end of Niagara Falls. Residents of 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th streets, from Pine Avenue to Niagara Street, are eligible for National Grid's "Light Up the Neighborhood" program, which offers new LED lighting in exchange for old light bulbs.

The United Way of Buffalo & Erie County has announced 13 organizations will receive grant funding from a $1 million commitment from the General Mills Foundation. The partnership aims to improve local community food security. It will support projects that address food access and affordability, and that help to increase employment, ownership and entrepreneurship opportunities related to food in high-need neighborhoods.

To mark the grand opening of the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center, the board of directors and staff will host three events to introduce the community to the location. The debut weekend will include an opening night celebration on Friday, May 4 (4-9 p.m.), an opening gala on Saturday, May 5 (starting at 5:30 p.m.), and a free community day on Sunday, May 6 (10 a.m. to 6 p.m.).

The Erie County Agricultural Society, sponsors of the Erie County Fair, invites brass, woodwind and percussion musicians, as well as color guard members in grades 7 through 12, to join the Erie County Fair Marching Band this summer.
