Tuesday night a couple thousand people gathered at the Niagara-Wheatfield gym for a basketball game between the Niagara-Wheatfield faculty and the Buffalo Sabres Alumni. The evening was more than a fun pickup game, though, as proceeds from the game benefitted the Bald for Bucks association in honor of the late James Campbell, who passed away in August due to cancer.

The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance announced more than 3 million personal income tax returns have been filed since the filing season began Jan. 29. The department also issued $875 million in refunds to taxpayers with an average state refund of more than $800.

Heart of Niagara Animal Rescue, a local rescue that has been saving the lives of unwanted, abandoned and homeless animals since 2012, will team up with local community groups for its annual fundraiser. The sixth annual "Heart to Heart: A Taste of the Niagara Region" will take place April 21, at the Cambria Wilson Volunteer Firehall in Lockport.

An event that started in the 1970s was reimagined Saturday as the women of St. Peter R.C. School presented a gala benefit. Once held in the student cafeteria, this year's rendition took place at the new wing of the Niagara Falls Country Club. There, parents, teachers, faculty and members of Rosary Altar Guild Society joined forces to stage a ladies luncheon, mother-daughter fashion show and grand gift and basket raffle, all to raise funds for the Lewiston elementary school.
